The Green Beret Foundation (GBF) is proud to spotlight the powerful energy and heartfelt mission behind our Steel Mags program, a network of women connected to U.S. Army Special Forces through family and service. These women are often the first line of support, strength, and advocacy for their Green Berets. One extraordinary example of this strength in action is our newest Steel Mags chapter, the Team Moms.
The story of the Team Moms began in late 2021 and early 2022, when three mothers, Laura, Robyn, and Stephanie, each with a son starting the arduous journey through the 18X pipeline, found each other in a Facebook support group. Their shared experiences quickly bonded them, and at one point, they formed a network of 50 moms whose sons were preparing to face the Special Forces Assessment and Selection (SFAS).
As the months passed and challenges mounted, that network refined itself to a core group of 15 dedicated mothers who remained connected through the highs and lows of the Q Course, language school, and team assignments. But they soon realized that the most challenging part, the deployments, the uncertainty, and the weight of silence, was beginning.
When their sons officially earned their Green Berets, Laura, Robyn, and Stephanie found themselves struggling to locate a community that could support mothers of fully qualified Special Forces soldiers. So, they created their own. What began as a small, “secret” Facebook group became a safe space for moms to share experiences, find reliable information, and offer strength to one another. This group would later become the heart of the Steel Mags Team Moms movement.
In December 2024, the trio met in person for the first time in Washington, D.C., and it was clear: their connection had forged something real, lasting, and deeply needed. That connection led to the first GB Mamas Retreat in Sedona, Arizona, in March 2025, an emotional, empowering, and unforgettable gathering that solidified their mission.
Following the retreat, the group officially partnered with the Green Beret Foundation and became a new Steel Mags Chapter: Steel Mags Team Moms.
These incredible women remain engaged on the home front, building community and connection wherever they can. The Steel Mags Team Moms are actively involved in raising awareness about the support offered by GBF and their unique Steel Mags Chapter by attending the Regimental First Formations and maintaining a strong presence at the John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Museum during family weekend. They ensure that the families of Green Berets always feel seen, heard, and supported.
One of the founding members, Robyn Porter, is a powerhouse in more ways than one. An accomplished realtor, Robyn has not only poured time and energy into the growth of Team Moms but has also backed that support financially by donating $5,000 to the Green Beret Foundation and pledging an additional $5,000 for 2025.
The Steel Mags program exists because of women like Laura, Robyn, and Stephanie, resilient, resourceful, and relentless in their pursuit of care and connection for the mothers of the Special Forces community. Their journey is a testament to what happens when purpose meets passion, and when women come together not just to support one another, but to lead.
We are honored to have the Steel Mags Team Moms as part of the GBF family. Their commitment to service, community, and each other is nothing short of inspiring.
